GLOBE – Gila County third grade students will soon be receiving a special gift thanks to the generosity of a consortium of community service organizations comprised of: The Pinal Mountain Elks #2809, The Rotary Club of Globe, The Copper Cities Rotary of Miami, The Superior Rotary Club and The Emblem Club #554. This consortium will be providing dictionaries to all third grade students attending the following elementary schools: Superior, Miami, Globe, Destiny, Young, San Carlos and Saint Charles Elementary. It is estimated that 500 dictionaries will be distributed this school year.
This year, with the assistance of Gila County School Superintendent Linda O’Dell’s office, the consortium will also be providing dictionaries to home schooled third grade students. If your student is home schooled, you can pick up your student’s free dictionary in the Gila County Schools Office, located inside the Gila County Courthouse. For the last 4 or 5 years, the Consortium distributed dictionaries to students in an effort to enhance the academic experience of our local third grade students. The “Dictionary Project” is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. The goal of this program is to assist all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Reading is the most important skill of all. It is the starting point for all the economic and social opportunities this world has to offer to an individual.
Each student must write his or her name in the new dictionary!
A final tidbit: All the third grade students will know where to find the longest word in the English language. Would you know where to look? The Pinal Mountain Elks, Globe Rotary, Superior Rotary, Emblem Club and Copper Cities Rotary challenge parents and students alike to find the longest word in the dictionary.
(We at the Superior Sun think it might be: antidisestablishmentarianism. But then again, we might be wrong.)
