The Panthers softball team is off to 2-2 start to their season. Head Coach Cheryl Lopez is very pleased with the performance of the team so far and believes the experiences of the early season will payoff later in the season.

“I think we’re still getting warmed up for the season,” she said. “We’ve had a great showing to start out.”

In the two victories, versus Gilbert Christian and Globe, the Panthers’ hitting was dramatically improved according to Coach Lopez. Entering the season, Lopez expected big things from some of the freshman on the team and they have not disappointed.

Pitchers Ivie Lopez and Keana Torres have performed very well in the early season. Freshman thumpers Pinky Thomas and Gabby Salcido each hit two home runs in the 12-10 victory against Globe.

Coach Lopez also said the all-around fielding has been very good from the Panthers’ players. With a young team still learning on the job, Lopez knows there are areas that need some improvement.

“I still want to see more spirit and communication,” she said.

The Panthers next play at Globe on Mar. 14, 2013. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Panther Baseball

The Panthers baseball team has struggled early in the season. With only a limited number of practices before the season began, the Panthers are gaining experience and making adjustments on the fly. Unfortunately, they have not been rewarded for their efforts so far. Coach Billy Duarte knows some of the adjustments that need to be made and they start with pitching. The Panthers upcoming schedule includes games @ Miami on Mar. 12 and @ Globe on Mar. 14.
