Lady Miners win five in a row to roll into second half of season

The San Manuel Lady Miners varsity basketball is ready to roll in the second half of the 2012-2013 campaign. San Manuel picked up wins over Greenfields, Immaculate Heart, Miami, Ray and Hayden to start off the second half of the season.

The Lady Miners got their start in Tucson on Jan. 8 against the Lady Griffins from Greenfields Country Day School with San Manuel bringing home the 45 – 39 win.

The Lady Miners outscored the Lady Griffins 9 – 7 in the first quarter and were outscored 16 – 14 in the second quarter to sit a 23 -23 tie at the half. In the second half, the Lady Miners were again outscored 10 – 9 in the third quarter but turned it around in the fourth quarter 13 – 6 to regain the lead and secure a 45 – 39 victory.

Leading the Lady Miners was Angelica Zuniga with a double-double scoring 14 points with 14 rebounds to go along with three assists, one steal and one block. Also hitting a double-double was Annalisa Robles who scored 12 points with 13 rebounds to go along with one assist and two blocks. Alexis Garibay scored eight points with two assists and one steal. Felicia Gomez scored five points with six rebounds. Leticia Reidhead scored three points with four rebounds and one assist. Asha Quintero scored two points with four rebounds and three assists. Rounding it out for the Lady Miners was Maximilliana Lara who scored one point with two rebounds.

The Lady Miners hosted Immaculate Heart on Jan. 9, escaping with a narrow 48 – 46 win over the Lady Knights. San Manuel fell behind in the first quarter 13 – 14 but turned the tide in the second quarter 13 – 8 to take a 26 – 22 halftime lead. In the third quarter the Lady Knights tied up the game 36 – 36 by outscoring the Lady Miners 14 – 10 in the quarter but in the fourth quarter, a single basket would mean the difference in the game as the Lady Miners edged the Lady Griffins by two points 12 – 10 to take the win 48 – 46.

Leading the Lady Miners was Angelica Zuniga with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Alexis Garibay scored nine points with two assists and one block. Annalisa Robles scored seven points with eight rebounds and two assists. Asha Quintero scored seven points with six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Maximilliana Lara scored seven points with four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Felicia Gomez scored five points with six rebounds, and one steal.

On Jan. 11, San Manuel hosted Miami, picking up another close win 34 – 32 against the Lady Vandals. The Lady Miners outscored Miami 4 – 3 in the first quarter and 11 – 6 in the second quarter to take a 15 – 9 lead at halftime. San Manuel kept the pressure up in the third quarter to take the quarter 9 – 8 but lost the fourth quarter 15 – 10 to close the gap within two points but Miami came up short 32 – 34.

The Lady Miners were led by Angelica Zungia who hit for another double-double scoring 12 point with 14 rebounds. Alexis Garibay scored 11 points with two rebounds. Maximilliana Lara scored six points with six rebounds and one steal. Asha Quintero scored three points with eight rebounds, three assists and one block. Leticia Reidhead scored two points with two rebounds and two assists. Annalisa Robles pulled down seven rebounds with two assists, and one block.

San Manuel welcomed the Lady Bearcats from Ray for a contest on Jan. 15 with the Lady Miners dominating the visitors 52 – 34.

The Lady Miners outscored the Lady Bearcats in each quarter taking the first quarter 14 – 8 and the second quarter 8 – 6 to hold the lead 22 – 14 at the half. In the second half, the Lady Miners took the third quarter 12 – 8 and also took the fourth 18 – 12 to take the victory 52 – 34.

Angelica Zuniga continued to lead the Lady Miners hitting for a game high 26 points with nine rebounds and one block. Alexis Garibay scored 10 points with one rebound, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Maximilliana Lara scored eight points with five rebounds, two assists and one block. Annalisa Robles scored six points with nine rebounds and four assists. Leticia Reidhead scored two points with one rebound and three steals.

The Lady Miners made the trip up the highway to take on the Lady Lobos from Hayden, San Manuel took control from the opening tip to finish off the Lady Lobos 51 – 9.

San Manuel jumped out to a 14 – 2 lead after the first quarter, then pushed the tempo in the second quarter 13 – 2 to take a 27 – 4 lead at the half. In the second half, the Lady Miners picked up where they left off taking the third quarter 16 – 3 and the fourth quarter 8 – 2 for a final of 51 – 9.

Leading the Lady Miners was Angelica Zuniga who hit for her third double-double in a five game stretch scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds with two assists, one steal and one block. Annalisa Robles scored nine points with 11 points and two assists. Maximilliana Lara scored nine points with seven rebounds and one steal. Alexis Garibay scored eight points with three assists. Asha Quintero scored five points with three points, three assists and one block. Felicia Gomez scored four points with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The Lady Miners took on Miami in Miami on Tuesday and will host Amphi on Friday with the JV playing at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity playing at 7 p.m.
