The San Manuel Miners girls’ basketball team has won five games in a row after defeating Superior and Santa Cruz Valley last week. The Miners are now 7 – 3 on the season.

The Miners defeated Superior, 38 – 15, behind 22 combined points from seniors Angelica Zuniga (15) and Analisa Robles (7). Felica Gomez added six points and had a perfect night shooting by going 3 for 3 from the field. Zuniga and junior Kadi Monfred tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Freshman Theresa Sweeney finished with six rebounds for the Miners.

The Miners defense held the Panthers to 13 percent shooting from the field and did not allow more than four points in any quarter.

The Miners ran past a winless Santa Cruz Valley team, 49 – 21, and handed them a ninth consecutive loss to open the season.

Angelica Zuniga turned in a monster effort with another double-double, 22 points and a whopping 21 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive side. Kadi Monfred was the second leading scorer in the game with nine points. Analisa Robles had 10 rebounds in the game.

The Miners will look to extend their winning streak this week with games at Tohono O’Odham on December 19, 2013 and at home versus Hayden on December 20. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
