Lady Bearcats set to make bid for state title

Ray High Bearcats

  All year long, the Ray girls’ basketball team has been one of the state’s best teams and now it will begin its final quest to prove it is the best. 

  The No. 9-seed Lady Bearcats, who finished the year with a 20 – 7 record, will take on No. 8-seed Mogollon in the 1A State Championship Tournament on Thursday at Yavapai Community College in Prescott.

  Ray, led by super-freshman Shelby Yocum, has won six of its last seven games entering Thursday’s first-round game. Mogollon finished the year 18 – 6, going undefeated (14 – 0) to the claim the 1A Central Region Championship.

  The Lady Cats were second in the 1A East Region, behind top-seed Ft. Thomas, the team the Ray will face in the second round with a win on Thursday.

  Thursday’s game is scheduled to tipoff at 1:30 p.m.
