Maybe you’ve seen them in Tucson and Oro Valley, in front of Fry’s or Safeway, giving away tootsie-rolls. They are outside Walmart and Walgreens, CVS and other stores this time of the year.
They are the Knights of Columbus, taking donations for People With Intellectual Disabilities.
Local Knights of Columbus don’t have a Fry’s or Walmart, but they are still doing their part.
Council 5542 will hold a taco dinner this Saturday, October 25, at Blessed Sacrament parish hall in Mammoth from 4pm to 7pm for $6. The meal will include tacos, rice and beans. To go meals will be available.
“The Knights of Columbus’ People with Intellectual Disabilities drive is a state wide and even a national program. We are happy to be part of this great effort,” said local Grand Knight, Roman “Rod” Rodriguez.
The Knights of Columbus has raised and donated more than $600 million to programs for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, according to District Deputy Drew Mansager.
Some donations go to Special Olympics and St. Joseph Youth Camp. Other money is donated to schools with Special Education programs as well as ARC, a program for adults with intellectual disabilities, Mansager said.
“We ask everyone to come by and have a great dinner for a great cause,” Rodriguez said.
