From the Kearny Police Department
There have been people receiving phone calls, supposedly from “Windows”, saying that their computer has been hacked and they need to download a program from another website to stop it before having to call a different phone number to get a second program to supposedly repair and protect their computer.
This is a scam to get your credit card number and access to your computer. The first program is a “Trojan” that disables your antivirus and anti-malware programs and allows them access to your computer. The second phone call will give them access to your name, address and credit card number for a product they want you to buy in order to fix the supposed problem. None of this will work because they have caused the problem to start with. You will have just given them access to every piece of information available on your computer and to your credit card information.
If this has happened to you, notify your local police department. If you get a call from these people, try to get any information you can from them including their name, phone number, where they are calling from, etc. and turn the information into the police department. Please notify the police department that they have called you even if they won’t give you any information.
Windows is a product of Microsoft. Microsoft will never contact you using the name of Windows. If they need to contact you it will be under the name of Microsoft and they will provide the caller’s name and control number. Microsoft will not call you unless you have contacted them. Any contact supposedly coming from Microsoft needs to be checked before you click on anything or give anyone your information.
