The Kearny Town Council voted 6-1 Monday to approve a resolution of support for Resolution Copper. Mayor Sam Hossler voted to oppose the resolution which he explained was for personal reasons.

Bruce Richardson, the Communications Manager for Resolution Copper Mining, gave a presentation to the council educating them on the project and the status of the land exchange legislation. In February both Representatives Kirkpatrick and Gosar introduced the H.R. 687 to propose the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013. The bill is expected to receive a hearing in the House Natural Resources Committee on Thursday.

Richardson explained that the company has always enjoyed regional support for the copper project near Superior. Councilman Gambell asked why recently the Town of Superior and City of Globe did not approve support resolutions. Richardson explained that they are continuing to work with the Town of Superior and that they will be providing a more detailed presentation to Globe. He explained that new council members and a new manager in Globe were not as aware of the project as in the past, “that is our (Resolution Copper) fault.” Richardson also explained that over 300 residents of Superior have signed a petition supporting the company.

The Council also approved a liquor license change for the General Kearny Inn, selected Robert Inguilli as the Kearny Police Chief and approved a resolution to allow the town to submit a grant to the Gila River Indian Community in the amount of $55,690 for equipment and a vehicle for the Kearny Police Department.
