Junior High Grapplers ready to get season started

The San Manuel Junior High wrestling team is ready to get the season started under the direction on 19 year Head Coach Alfred Trejo along with assistants Pablo Rodriguez and Gilbert Rodriguez will look to lead the young Miners onto a Central Junior High League title.

San Manuel will return starters – eighth graders Franky Renteria who placed fifth at State last year and Colbey Stratton , seventh graders Ruben Hernandez , Ezra Miller , and Andy Salas. The top newcomer is Jacob Medina.

Coach Trejo said, “We should be in the hunt for the region title. We are young and inexperienced, but the boys have heart. Our freestyle wrestling program is helping with the younger wrestlers in getting them experience.”

The Miners hosted a multi – meet on Nov. 27 against Hayden and Imagine Prep to get the season officially started.

The Miners took down their counterparts by defeating Hayden 60 – 12 and Imagine Prep 60 – 12.

Individually, wrestling at 73 lbs. David Richardson lost by fall to Imagine Prep and won by forfeit over Hayden. Wrestling at 78 lbs. Jose Salas won by fall in 2:32 over Imagine Prep and won by forfeit over Hayden.

Wrestling at 98 lbs. Ezra Miller won by forfeit over Imagine Prep and won by fall in 2:48 over Hayden. Wrestling at 104 lbs. Franky Renteria won by forfeit over Imagine Prep and won by fall in 2:40 over Hayden. Wrestling at 111 lbs. Will Newman lost by fall to Imagine Prep and Hayden.

Wrestling at 111 lbs. Kiah Blank won by fall in 3:30 over Hayden. Wrestling at 118 lbs. Broc Traweek lost by fall to Imagine Prep and won by fall in :29 over Hayden. Wrestling at 125 lbs. Jacob Medina won by fall in 3:15 over Imagine Prep and won by fall in :52 over Hayden. Wrestling at 133 lbs. Cisco Curry won by fall in :50 over Imagine Prep and won by fall in 2:42 over Hayden.

Wrestling at142 lbs. Colbey Stratton won by fall in 2:53 over Imagine Prep and won by fall in 2:25 over Hayden. Wrestling at 154 lbs. Robert Franco won by fall in 2:50 over Imagine Prep and won by fall in 2:30 over Hayden. Wresting at heavyweight Ruben Hernandezwon by forfeit over Imagine Prep and Hayden.

The Miners made the trip to Eloy on Tuesday Dec. 4 to battle with Eloy and Hayden, the Miners will then hit the road to San Carlos on Dec. 11 to take on Imagine Prep and San Carlos, wrestling starts at 4 p.m.
