Jr. High Lobos at High Desert MS

By N. Waddell

With their first scheduled road game of the season postponed because of scheduling problems, the Jr. High Lobo basketball teams prepared for their second road game of the season, a trip to Globe to take on the High Desert Middle School Tiger basketball teams. The trip was a success for three of the Lobo teams.

The first game had the Lobo girl’s seventh grade team taking on their seventh grade counterparts in a very low scoring game. The Lady Lobo team was trailing the High Desert team 2 to 4 at the end of the first half of play.

It was 4 to 6 after three periods before the Lady Lobo team got hot scoring nine fourth period points while the defense held the Lady Tigers to only one point to win the game 13 to 9. Only three Lady Lobo players were on the score list with Brandi Lopez leading the way with eight points followed by Aliyana Perez with three points and Jaden Gonzales with two points.

The seventh grade boys Lobo team were on the court next against the Tigers in another low scoring game. The Lobos took a two point five to three lead at the end of the first period and played the Tigers to a five to five draw in the second period to go into the half time locker room with a two-point lead, 10 to 8.

The Lobo defense came out strong in the third quarter holding the Tigers scoreless but the Lobo offense could only hit for two baskets to lead 14 to 8 after three periods.

The Tigers fought back but could not overcome the Lobo lead giving the seventh grade Lobo team a 16 to 12 win. Only three Lobos were able to put the basketball in the basket with Emitt Sims leading the way with seven points. Julian Cruz pumped in six points with Joaquin Camarena getting three points.

The tall and running Lady Lobo eighth grade team was on the court next and their superior play on both offense and defense led to lopsided win over the Lady Tiger team.

The scoring of Brandi Lopez carried the Lady Lobos to an 11 to 5 lead over the Lady Tigers in the first quarter of play. Lexy Gomez took over putting the basketball in the basket in the second quarter as the Lady Lobos took a commanding 24 to 7 lead into the halftime break.

The Lobos scoring cooled in the third period as both teams fought to a 4 to 4 draw with the Lobos protecting their lead after three periods of play. The scoring came back in the fourth quarter and the defense stayed just as tough for the Lady Lobos as they cruised to a 39 to 16 win over the High Desert Lady Tigers.

Brandi Lopez took scoring honors in this game with 13 points with Lexy Gomez one point behind with 12 points. Jessica Lopez had five points with Jaden Gonzales adding four points. Rounding out Lobo scoring were Martha Palofox with two points and Leticia Vargas with one point.

The Lobo boy’s eighth grade team was on the court for the final game of the night and with their big boy in the middle out of action with an injury they could not pull out a win over the Tigers. The three point shooting of the Lobos gave them a 9 to 6 led after one quarter of play and took a one-point lead 11 to 10 into the half time break.

The Lobos came out cold in the third period only able to score three points while the Tigers took over the lead scoring seven third quarter points to lead 14 to 17 at the end of three periods. The Lobos could not overcome the lead as the Tigers played the Lobos to a 6 to 6 draw in the final stanza to claim a hard fought 20 to 24 win over the Lobos.

Emitt Sims led the Lobo score sheet with 11 points with Santiago Pina adding four points. Adrian Encinas had three points with Robert Bohrn and John Henry Gaona adding one point apiece.

The Lobo teams have one game left before taking their Christmas break and that game will be this Monday when the San Carlos Jr. High Braves come to Hayden Gym for four games.
