Calling themselves the DLK Club, several students from John F. Kennedy Elementary School hosted a cornhole tournament to raise money for their schoolmate Marisol Perez. Marisol is a pre-schooler at JFK who was diagnosed with Leukemia in October.
The event was supervised by family members of the students but the kids organized the event and advertised it on their own. They drew posters for advertisements, asked for donations for prizes and raffle item; then they got to work selling raffle tickets, registering their friends for the tournament and sold food to help raise money to help their friend.
The tournament was only open to elementary age kids, these students played fierce competitions to win the first place prize of two brand new mountain bikes donated by the Red Bear Outfitters. Several local businesses and organizations also donated kid friendly prizes for the event.
These kids proved that the giving spirit of Superior residents will continue by hosting this event, all together they were just a few dollars short of raising $600 in one afternoon. All of the proceeds raised were given to Marisol’s parents to help with her medical and transportation costs.
And the winners of the cornhole tournament? Jalen Oatis (fifth grade) and Samuel Lopez (sixth grade) won first place.
