HWUSD to lower tax rates for property owners

It’s good news for taxpayers in the Hayden-Winkelman School District.

Hayden-Winkelman School District is debt free and will have lower tax rates.

Local property owners and business will get a happy surprise as they open their property tax bills this fall. On July 1, 2015, the HWUSD will make its final bond payment which will result in significantly lower property taxes.

“The District is very grateful to the community and ASARCO for having the patience and support through these very difficult times,” said Superintendent Jeff Gregorich. “Many times over the past two decades, we have faced enormous financial problems as a School District and community, but we overcame the challenge that I believe has only made us more resilient and committed to keep our school district open and strong for our children and theirs.”

A.R.S. 15-905.01 requires any School District that budgets for the Small School Adjustment funds to publish a Truth in Taxation notice and hold a Truth in Taxation Hearing.

“The required notice leads the taxpayer to believe that their property taxes will increase,” Gregorich said. “The truth is that while the total levy for the Small School Adjustment will increase in FY2015-16, the District’s total tax rate will not increase next year.”

He added, “The small school adjustment has been levied for several years now and has helped the District continue to offer quality educational programs to serve our students and community. The additional funds allow small districts like ours, the ability to have the needed resources to operate our schools during ongoing state budget reductions.”
