The America’s Cup Wrestling Tournament is three-day folkstyle wrestling event in Clovis, California during Memorial Day Weekend. This is a SCWAY/NUWAY wrestling tournament which includes the top wrestling programs from across the country. Last year AZWAY took a high school squad to the tournament and this year AZWAY took two high school squads and one middle school squad.

Each wrestler that has qualified for an AZWAY team is expected to wrestle 15 to 18 matches against some of the toughest high school wrestlers in the country coming as far as Florida and Michigan.

Ruben Hernandez from San Manuel Junior-Senior High School wrestled at 235 pounds for Team Arizona’s Middle school squad. During the team tournament, Hernandez lost a few close matches early on but still qualified for the individual tournament. Making the necessary adjustments and wrestling with fury, Ruben avenged his first loss and beat Oregon’s Middle School State Champion Jackson Castell in the semi-finals which advanced him into the finals. In the Championship, Hernandez faced TK Capps from Michigan. After wrestling all three periods, Hernandez lost by decision.

Ruben wrestled really well this weekend. Not being able to wrestle at the Arizona Junior High State Championships this past January due to an injury really motivated him to get back on the mat. Wrestling in freestyle and AZWAY tournaments and having his team mates push him to his limits at practice prepared him to compete with the best kids in the country. His family, coaching staff and team mates are very proud of him. Great job Ruben!
