Superior – According to Teresita Olmos, April has been a great month at Superior Head Start, with the students learning a little something about the joys of springtime growth and renewal.
“The children begun the month by listening to the Jack and the Beanstalk & the Carrot Seed stories. Each child took turns planting vegetable seeds inside the Head Start playground planters with the focus on “growing.” said Ms. Olmos.
What else have the Superior Head Start students and staff been up to? While singing the song “Let It Go”, from the movie Frozen, they have been hard at work (and play) creating different things to display for the Week of the Young Child. This year’s theme for this special week is “All About Me.” To see their artwork, visit the Superior Senior Citizens Center, the Superior Public Library, or the Superior Head Start classroom, where it will be on display all this week.
The children had a great time at Rose’s Roses while touring the store. taking time to name the flowers and discuss several occasions of when to give which flowers to give; and, expressing how it feels to receive flowers. Each child was given a fresh carnation of their choice which the children later presented to their family member(s).
Kids and dads came together for the Fatherhood Outdoor Planting Activity held Friday, April 17th. Fathers and children took time to bond and to plant a variety of vegetable and flower seeds. Fathers volunteered in the classroom as part of the National Fatherhood Initiative.
“This is one of many parent volunteer opportunities enrolled families in the Superior Head Start program have available to engage with their child,” said Olmos. “Parents are a child’s first teacher.”
