The Hayden wrestling team was one of 16 teams to compete at the recent Gila Valley Tournament and the Lobos finished 5 – 2 with all of their wrestlers qualifying for the individual tournament.
“That was pretty good because we only took seven wrestlers to the tournament,” Hayden head coach John Estrada told the Copper Basin News in a text message. “I told the kids, in order to win duels with the amount of wrestlers we have on our team we needed pins to win.”
The Lobos had four wrestlers – Mikee Mariscal (106), Omar Lopez (120), Brandon Cruz (152) and Joel Rodriguez (195) – advance to championship matches. All four placed second.
Noah Monroy (145) lost in the semifinals but bounced back to take home third-place.
Ryan Donovan (138) earned a fifth-place finish and Peter Kame (170) finished sixth.
Hayden will travel to Round Valley for a duel match on Wednesday before competing in the Titan Tournament at Chandler Prep on Saturday.
