Handwriting Rocks! Soul Portrait

In 1987 I was invited to attend a workshop entitled “Experiencing Creativity” offered by Arthur Douët of Georgetown, Texas. The painting class was to be held in Oklahoma City. I had met Douët at a psychic fair a couple of years earlier. Soft spoken, slight accent and blessed with an ever ready smile, he made people feel welcome and at ease.

Born in Jamaica to parents of Jamaican and French backgrounds, Douët was endowed with an extraordinary talent for music at an early age. Without ever receiving formal training, the young man was able to play piano concertos simply by listening to classical renditions and then reproducing them. His mother was told by experts that it would not be advisable to mess with such a God given talent by having him re-learn musical notes.

Douët was also an extraordinary visual artist gifted with the ability to reproduce on paper what his eyes could see and what was perceived by his intuition. Not only did he excel in painting human beings, but also angels and what he called visions of “inner spaces.”

Additionally, this man coached police artists in using their own intuitive senses when drawing faces of offenders according to witness descriptions.

At art exhibits, visitors would linger around his booth, chatting and laughing with him and sometimes buying one of his paintings.

The all day workshop in Oklahoma was well attended and I remember one woman in particular who experienced a real breakthrough after a couple of hours into the exercise. Her artistic rendering was quite unique in that it had beautifully shaped objects drawn in simple, yet powerful strokes. Tears were running down her cheeks. She had been able to overcome repressed memories and connect with the source of personal creativity. The group did not know the details of her challenges, but somehow through the painting exercises she had been able to attain peace of mind.

Douët informed us that he was staying in town for the whole weekend and was offering to do soul portraits, if anyone was interested.

I had no idea what a soul portrait was, but it sounded intriguing. Besides, his art was pleasing to my eyes.

The problem was the money. I had time, but lacked the finances. However, common sense told me that here we were in Oklahoma City and we might never meet again. His career was well established in Austin, TX, whereas my life had taken roots in Fort Worth. Somehow, the money simply had to be found… and it was. Things always work out the way they are supposed to.

Next day, I posed for him in a hotel lobby. Douët performed rituals associated with divining the essence of his subject and then transferring that vision to canvas.

By coincidence, part of this session was filmed by a University film crew who had stayed at that same hotel after shooting a different project.

My portrait would be finished weeks later at Douët’s studio in Austin and then shipped to me by US mail.

It is surprising to discover certain details found in the portrait. For example, he put vortices above my head. They would play a significant role later in my life. I received special healing at the Airport Mesa Vortex in Sedona when I was almost paralyzed with back pain. Later on, I would buy a home in Oracle that sits between vortices.

In a letter accompanying the painting, the artist describes the significance of the flowers and the colors green and purple, as perceived by him during the sitting. All in all, the soul portrait turned out to be a description of the path my life would take, however without a timeline.

He elaborated on strengths and weaknesses and his comments turned out to be non-judgmental and supportive of my personal qualities.

Douët told me how at other sittings he might sense an eagle, or a spirit, or some other symbolic item associated with the individual he was painting. According to his way of thinking, these insights were more important than emphasis on exact facial reproduction.

In my case however, I thought the finished portrait was flattering and more beautiful than I thought of myself.

Handwriting Analysis

A graphoanalytic examination of Douët’s handwriting confirms the numerous talents listed for this man.

He used brown ink on beige parchment paper. These colors in themselves are warm, inviting and reassuring to the reader.

The quality of rhythm stands out first and foremost in his script. Rhythm seems to override all other aspects of his handwriting.

There is no repression seen in the script. Repression would prevent and obstruct the free flow of hands in drawing or playing the piano.

Intuition is seen in imperceptible breaks between letter connections in words (see: consciousness).

The slant is indicative of a person who truly cares for other people and enjoys being in their company.

The pen pressure is strong enough to support nuances in color and tonal quality without being too heavy to have him get stuck in one area or another.

The overall aspect of the writing, even to the untrained eye, is that of a pleasing exercise.

It is therefore with sadness that I recently discovered that this man’s life had come to an end on Dec. 31, 2013, after having been partially paralyzed by a stroke a few years earlier.

No doubt Douët has joined many departed souls he had painted, as well as the legion of angels that were reproduced in many of his works.

Douët’s art can be viewed and obtained on his website. My favorite is an original painting called “my cup runneth over,” very appropriately named after his own life!
