Good eats in the Copper Corridor

Throughout the Copper Corridor you will encounter numerous authentic, family-owned and operated Mexican restaurants, along with great American, Italian and even a unique Asian restaurant.

Food prices are all very affordable with great variety. Each of our selected restaurants have rich stories of how their families started out in the restaurant business and many still use the recipes from many generations ago.

The Los Hermanos restaurant is a favorite amongst hikers and motorcyclists. Stop in for an authentic Mexican breakfast and enjoy one of the best Bloody Marys in the area.

At Los Hermanos, remember to buy a dozen of their home made tortillas before you leave. They are located at 835 US Highway 60 in Superior, open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, call 520-689-5465 for reservations.

If you are looking to enjoy lunch or dinner, stops at Casa Denogean’s in Superior or Guayo’s El Rey in Miami are favorites of the locals.

Casa Denogean’s is at 649 US Highway 60 in Superior, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed Mondays, call 520-689-2866.

Guayo’s El Rey is at 716 Sullivan Street in Miami, open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed Tuesday, call 928-473-9960.

In the Globe/Miami area, a trip is not complete without a stop at Joe’s Broad Street Grill with their variety of fresh salads, Italian food, burgers and sandwiches.

Joe’s is located at 247 South Broad Street in Globe, open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Mondays, call 928-425-4707.

If you are looking for Asian food, you cannot miss a visit to Jade Grill in Superior where Lucy Wing has returned home to bring her Asian inspired barbeque dishes to the area.

Jade Grill is located at 639 US Highway 60 in Superior, open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, 5:30 p.m. to 8p.m. for dinner Tuesday through Sunday.

Heading south on Highway 177 will bring you to the town of Kearny in the Copper Basin Area.

Rosalia’s is located in the General Kearny Inn Complex at 301 Alden Rd. in Kearny. The restaurant features authentic homemade Mexican food and a variety of American food including burgers, steaks and all the fixings, along with other sandwiches and salads.

On the Mexican menu are the usual favorites such as red, green and bean burros and ground beef, shredded beef and carnitas tacos and more. Also red and green tamales and a variety of combination plates are available.

Rosalia’s is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. to noon and lunch starts at 11 a.m. Menudo is always available on Sundays and there are daily specials, both for soup, breakfast and lunch.

Old Time Pizza, located at 370 Alden Rd. in Kearny, not only offers great pizza, but also features deli sandwiches, a salad bar, appetizers and dessert. Specialties include calzones, spaghetti, lasagna, antipasto salad and much more.

Daily specials such as the cheeseburger combo and philly sandwiches are also available and the best family value is the Dr. Pizza Special that includes a giant 16 inch pizza, nine breadsticks, 12 hot wings and one 2 liter of soda for only $24.99.

Pizza sizes range from eight inch to 16 inch and the pizza dough is made in-house. Fourteen different toppings can be added in any combination. Along with the traditional pizza, one can sample a vegetarian, Mexican or teriyaki pizza.

West End Café is at 335 Airport Rd. in Kearny and is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Five dollar specials are featured everyday and breakfast is served all day. On the menu are breakfast and lunch favorites such as the Big Bradley breakfast that includes three eggs, a pork chop, biscuits and gravy and pancakes, plus blueberry pancakes, French toast and breakfast croissants.

Also featured is the 8 oz. flame broiled burger and the all you can eat fish fry on Fridays.

Buzzy’s is a long time favorite in the Copper Basin area. It is located on Tilbury Rd. in Kearny and offers a variety of burgers, sandwiches and other fast foods, along with red, bean and green burros, tacos and enchiladas. Soft serve ice cream, shakes, sundaes and fountain drinks are also offered. The menu includes everything from Mexican fry bread to onion rings. Eat in or take out, call 520-363-7371. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturdays. Closed Sundays.

Maria’s Restaurant is located at 607 Morris Rd. on Hwy 177 in Hayden. Homemade Mexican food is featured along with American food offerings.

The menu includes all the Mexican favorites, along with burgers and so much more. Menudo is available on the weekends and a different soup is featured during the week. There are daily specials and the restaurant is open for breakfast until 11 a.m.

Heading further south on Highway 77 takes you through the Tri Community and Catalina, with several excellent eateries from which to choose.

The La Casita Mexican restaurant set the bar for Mexican restaurants in the area back in 1970 when Pedro and Mary Reynoso opened La Casita in Mammoth. The Mexican food is all homemade using traditional family recipes. You will never find a green chili as flavorful and good as La Casita’s any where in Southern Arizona. Their son Pete now operates the La Casita in San Manuel using these same family recipes.

La Casita in Mammoth serves menudo, tamales, chimichangas, cheese crisps, flautas, tacos, tostadas, burros (bean, red chile, green chile, or mixed with beans), enchiladas, etc. You can order ala carte or a combination plate. The combination plates include #1 – enchilada, taco, tamale; #2 enchilada, taco, tostada; #4 – enchilada, chile relleno, taco: #5 – enchilada, taco, mixed red burro. They also offer a machaca plate, and green or red chili plates which include beans and rice and tortillas. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they offer a T – bone steak or grilled chicken breast dinner. La Casita Mammoth is open Wednesday through Monday from 11 am to 9 pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

The La Casita in San Manuel, owned by Pete and Maria Reynoso, serves the same delicious Mexican food as the one in Mammoth but also serves breakfast until 11 am. They serve a variety of egg plates with your choice of meats or green or red chile. Breakfast burro combinations of eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage and cheese are available as well as pancakes. They also serve biscuits and gravy. For lunch or early dinner besides Mexican food they offer butterfly shrimp platters, fried fish and fries or fried fish with beans, rice and tortilla. Hamburgers, chicken breast, BLT, and grilled cheese are some of the available sandwiches. A Philly cheesesteak is another specialty. The San Manuel La Casita is open until 5 pm Sunday through Friday. Closed Saturdays and no breakfast served on Sunday.

Juan and Maria Rodriguez-Ibarra are owner/operators of De Marco’s restaurants in Oracle and San Manuel. Juan manages the one in Oracle and Maria takes care of their San Manuel restaurant.

Both restaurants serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their breakfast menu has an assortment of omelets, skillet breakfasts, and eggs to order options as well as a variety of pancakes and French toast. Their breakfast burritos are made with hash browns, cheese, eggs and a choice of meat including bacon, sausage, ham and chorizo. Omelets include cheese, spinach, ham, mushroom sausage, etc. They have a Denver omelet and a vegetarian omelet. All breakfasts are served with homemade bread. The skillet options include The Hobo – hash browns, two eggs any style, onions and peppers, topped with melted cheese; The Miners – hash browns, two eggs any style, onions and green peppers, sausage, bacon and ham, topped off with cheese.

Lunch and dinner selections include a variety of pizzas, calzone, salads, pasta dinners and hot and cold subs made with homemade bread. Cold subs are served with mayo, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and provolone cheese. A few of their 10 cold subs are the Veggie – cheese, lettuce, tomato, black olives, mushrooms and sweet peppers. Italian Super – ham, salami and capicolla. Seafood Salad Sub – Shrimp and crab meat with celery and mayonnaise. Hot subs include a Philly Cheesesteak – Sliced sirloin steak, sautéed onions and American cheese. Meatball, Sausage or Eggplant Parmagiana.

A large variety of pizza toppings are available as well as specialty pizzas such as a White Pizza – mozzarella cheese, fresh garlic, oregano, and Parmesan cheese. Hawaiian Pizza – fresh pineapple and ham. There is a huge variety of pasta dinners served with sea food, chicken, Italian sausage or meatballs. Vegetarian options include Pasta Primavera – sautéed broccoli, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, onions , celery and fresh garlic; Spinach and Garlic Ravioli – served with red garlic sauce. Desserts include tiramisu, cannoli, and cheesecake. Enjoy quality Italian food in a casual dining atmosphere.

The Oracle De Marco’s is located at 1885 W. American Avenue. For fast take-out call 520-896-9627 or 520-896-9582. In San Manuel De Marco’s is at 329 South Avenue A. Call 520-385-3000 or 520-385-0700. Both restaurants are open daily 9 am to 9 pm and closed on Tuesday.

Nonna Maria’s Pizzeria and Ristorante is another fine Italian restaurant located in the historic town of Oracle. Frank and Angelina Palazzolo own the charming restaurant named after Frank’s grandmother who inspired the recipes used in the restaurant.

Frank grew up surrounded by the restaurant business in Sicily and Illinois. The location of Nonna Maria’s was chosen because of its similarity to the Sicilian countryside that Frank remembers. It also boasts one of the best “sunset” views of Oracle and the surrounding countryside.

The restaurant serves pizza, calzones, pasta and sandwiches. Besides the standard fare, they serve a variety of Italian dishes using the freshest ingredients with seafood, chicken and meat. Their seafood entrees include Shrimp Fra Diavolo – sautéed shrimp in a spicy marinara sauce, topped on a bed of linguine; Seafood Inamorata – steamed clams, sautéed shrimp, and sundried tomatoes tossed in a white wine sauce with linguine; and Salmon Sorrento – Pan seared salmon in a thick colorful sauce of capers, green olives, chopped tomatoes, and lemon tossed with fettucine. Chicken entrees include Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Alfredo, and Florentine Chicken Pesto – fettucine with spinach in a creamy pesto sauce, topped with grilled chicken.

Nonna Maria’s can accommodate parties and events and catering service is also available. Beer and wine are available for your dining pleasure.

Chef Frank Palazzolo is an artist in the kitchen and at home. His paintings, as artist Papuni, decorate the walls of the restaurant.

Family-owned and operated Vitello’s Ristorante Italiano has been in Catalina for eight years. Owners Hatim Rdid and his wife Lucy Palazzolo have provided a family-friendly atmosphere that cooks up some excellent Italian cuisine.

Their menu includes pizza, calzone, salads and a broad selection of meat, chicken, seafood and vegetarian meals. Their appetizers include bruschetta – toasted homemade bread topped with diced fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and olive oil, toasted raviolis and fried calamari. Entrees from seafood such as Cioppino Tutto Mare – fresh mussels, fresh clams, scallops, shrimps , choice of garlic white wine sauce or red sauce over linguini to Chicken Pinocchio – lightly breaded chicken breast topped with spinach, mushrooms, creamy Gorgonzola sauce and of course Vitello means veal in Italian and veal is a specialty. You can have Vitello Pinocchio, Vitello Picatta – sautéed veal medallions with capers in lemon white wine sauce or Vitello Mezzaluna – breaded veal medallions sautéed with prosciutto in a vodka creamy tomato sauce and Parmesan. If you have room for dessert you can choose from homemade tiramisu, cannoli, cheescake and more.
