Last month the Lopez family of Superior experienced two major losses in the span of seven days. The family lost two brothers Joey and Steve, both of whom were active members of the community.Together they left behind a legacy of family, friends, and many memories but their unexpected losses created an undue and large financial burden on their families. When their friends and family learned of these troubles a benefit was planned, advertised and executed within two weeks.

On Sunday hundreds of people, young and old, gathered at the Los Hermanos ball room to listen to the music of Angie Gomez and the Powerdrive Band, Los Guys, and the Superior All Star Band. All of these musicians donated their time to the benefit.

Steve Lopez was a well known musician and played with many of the band members and so the benefit also gave everyone an opportunity to listen to the music he recorded before.Roy “Potts”Chavezwas the master of ceremonies for the benefit and he donated the use of his sound equipment and disk jockey services.

The volunteers who organized the event gathered up donations for multiple raffles and auctions that were given away during the event. One of the major prized raffled off was a three hour party bus rental. All of the food was donated so that ensured that the $10 admission fee was going straight to the family.

Those in attendance commented at how it had been such a long time since they had seen the Los Hermanos so full. While death and grief are always tragic no matter what the circumstance Superiorites near and far all rallied for this family once again showing the care and compassion that residents of Superior truly have for one another.Throughout the history of Superior it has been a common practice that everyone rallies around each other to provide support, love and compassion.

Olga Lopez the wife of Joey Lopez thanked everyone for coming and supporting their family during this time, she thanked them for the food, calls, visits, texts and she asked everyone to”appreciate those you love and enjoy every day.”

Writers note: Seeing this generosity, love and support in our community truly makes me so proud to call Superior my home.
