My weeds grew fastest during the hot days of August, when I was least inclined to get rid of them. The mornings are cooler now, though, so this week I will take time to clear my yards. I suspect several of us will be doing the same thing.
I am thankful for the way most Kearny residents keep up their homes and yards. If we keep pushing, we can keep the blight monster away. Blight destroys property values, keeps new people from moving in, and encourages people to leave.
In October ASARCO is sponsoring a day of “give back” to Kearny. Mine employees will spend a day improving our buildings and facilities at Hubbard Park, and the mine is covering all the material costs.
Now that fall is approaching, the Journey for a Clean Kearny group will redouble its efforts to improve the business area on Alden Road with plants and other features. Even in the August heat, some of the members continued cleaning yards and picking up litter.
One of my long-time concerns is high speeds of cars and trucks on 177 when passing through Kearny. The speed limits are clearly marked, but often disregarded. We have had many accidents at the intersections as a result. I will be approaching the Governor’s Office for Highway Safety to see what might be done about this.
Labor Day is coming up soon. I hope we will see this day as more than a mere day off, and use it to celebrate the workers who make our country strong. It should be evident, in a mining town such as ours, that gargantuan labors were required to make the mines what they are today. Thank a miner, working or retired. And thank everyone at Norm’s IGA, at the Ace Hardware Store, at the medical clinic… indeed, at all our businesses where people work to make our lives here possible.
