“Ted DeGrazia and the Superstition Mountains” is Topic of Final Museum Lecture on April 9.
A presentation given by two of the top people from the DeGrazia Foundation in Tucson on “Ted DeGrazia and the Superstition Mountains” will close the 2015 lecture free lecture series “Legends and Lore of the Superstitions and More” on Thursday, April 9, at 2 p.m.
The Foundation’s Executive Director Lance Laber will be joined by Collections Manager Jim Jenkins and they will discuss the life and art of Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, famous Arizona artist and rebel. Special attention will be given to DeGrazia’s lifelong love of the Superstition Mountains, his Superstition Gallery once located in the foothills not far from the museum, and his rebellious act of burning some of his original paintings in the Superstition Mountains near Angel Springs to protest the government’s Federal Inheritance Tax Laws on artists.
Lance Laber’s life has been intertwined with the DeGrazia family since he grew up in the same Tucson neighborhood with Ted DeGrazia’s son and grandchildren as friends and neighbors. As executive director of the foundation established to carry on DeGrazia’s legacy after his death, Lance oversees the beautiful and impressive Gallery in the Sun located at 6300 N. Swan Rd. in Tucson. Jim Jenkins manages the gallery’s archives containing hundreds of original DeGrazia paintings, and sets up the various exhibits that are rotated through the gallery for the public to enjoy.
April 9 will also mark the closing date of DeGrazia’s original “Superstition Collection” that has been on exhibition loan in the Superstition Mountain Museum Gallery for two seasons through the generosity of the DeGrazia Foundation.
Admission to the lectures and parking are free. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are asked to bring along a chair as the events take place in the museum’s amphitheater located at 4087 N. Apache Trail where seated is limited.
