Former Hayden wrestler Lino Estrada is returning to the high school to co-host a one-day wrestling clinic on Dec. 30. Elementary school-aged wrestlers through high school-aged wrestlers are invited to attend the clinic that will feature instruction from Estrada and Kyle McCrite, a National Champion and two-time All-American at Grand Canyon University.

Estrada, a three-time state champion at Hayden, currently coaches at Colorado Mesa University. After graduating from Hayden, Estrada attended Grand Canyon University, where he earned All-American recognition and won a regional championship.

He’s excited for the opportunity presented by current Hayden wresting coach Jeff Gregorich, who invited Estrada to return home to host the clinic, aiming to help Hayden achieve a more long-term goal to return the school’s wrestling program to prominence among the state’s elite.

“As a former Lobo I really appreciate what Coach Gregorich is trying to do at Hayden,” Estrada said. “To be able to come home and host a clinic in my hometown and my home gym is awesome. It’s really important to me to give back to my community and my hometown, so I’m really excited for this clinic.”

Wrestlers who attend the clinic can expect to learn some of the same things that helped Estrada and McCrite achieve championships and accolades all the way through the collegiate ranks.

“First things first, we’re going to have some fun and make it enjoyable for the kids who attend the clinic,” Estrada told theCopper Basin News. “We’ll focus on the fundamentals and some basic techniques. I learned as a young kid, and carried it all the way through college, that fundamentals and technique can take you a long way in wresting.”

The 2015 Hayden Lobo Holiday Wrestling Clinic will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Hayden High School. For wrestlers 13 and under, registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. For wrestlers 14 and older, registration opens at 12:30 p.m. and the clinic will be held from 2-4 p.m. Cost is $25. The concession stand will be open and there will be shirts for sale. The event is sponsored by the Hayden High School Wrestling Club.
