The Tonto National Forest hosted an open forum to hear public comments regarding the Apache Leap Management plan that is being created. The plan was required as part of the legislation that approved the Resolution Copper Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act in 2014. According to the legislation the Forest Service must issues a Notice of Decision by the end of December 2017.
The Apache Leap Management Plan addresses current and future recreational needs, Native American concerns and overall preservation of the escarpment of Apache Leap for the life of the mine. The legislation requires the plan to manage 807 acres of Apache Leap but does not affect the Cross or S monuments on the mountain.
Local leaders and community members have expressed concern that the Forest Service could restrict access for hiking or recreation in the area of Apache Leap. The Cross Canyon trails are used by locals and visitors. Climbing groups have also requested that there be vehicular access to the base of the escarpment to allow for easy access to climbing. The plan does address the need to limit vehicle access on the Apache Leap mountain.
The public is invited to comment on the proposed plans through May 1, 2017. You can view the plan online at www.ApacheLeapSMA.us. You may also contact the Forest Service Project Manager, Mary Rasmussen via email at info@ApacheLeapSMA.us.
