The Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) of Superior High School hosted their annual Senior Adult Prom on Saturday. The group has been hosting this annual event for six years as a community service project.

The teens in FCCLA work to provide a dinner and DJ dance for the senior adults in the community. “The students were here at nine in the morning on a Saturday preparing the food and decorations for the dance, explained Terry Villaverde, the FCCLA sponsor. “They all worked very hard.”

Youth groups across America began hosting “Senior/Senior” proms to provide a prom experience to World War II veterans who missed their own proms while performing their military service.

Many of the teens involved with the event invited their grandparents to come. Villaverde said the event gathered 60 adults total, the largest prom attendance thus far.

“We had much more student involvement,” he said. “It was nice to see the students interacting and dancing with their grandparents.”

FCCLA members Nicole Godinez and Alyssa Barragan led the project this year. The team will present the project at the state FCCLA competitions in the coming spring.
