The Kearny Yard of the Month for January is at the home of Phil and Ginger Faucette, on 105 Allen.
The Faucettes have lived here more than 20 years. They liked their original grassy yard, but Phil remarked that the cost of water and the mowing and care required moved him toward a desert-style landscape. The yard is large, so the project took a long time. They built hillocks, brought in yard river rock, and planted desert trees. Ingeniously, they used small sections of artificial grass to make the colors “pop.” The artificial grass, placed here and there, pulls all the elements together.
They did most of the work themselves. They are now putting the finishing touches on their back yard, which includes a large koi pond and a large play area for their many grandchildren.
The beautiful work the Faucettes did contains many elements which could readily be adapted to a smaller yard, especially the judicious use of small amounts of artificial grass.
