Doyle Ray Vines, 67 , died at 1:50 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2015, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Illinois. He was born Sept. 16, 1947 in Anna, the son of Raymond and Love (Karraker) Vines. They preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro High School, Southern, Illinois University and did post graduate work at Arizona State University.
He was a town manager in Jerome and Bisbee, and also a restaurant owner in Tempe. He had previously worked for Fidelity Insurance Company in Chicago, and a health care network for the indigent in Phoenix.
In recent years, he has been active in the Southern Illinois area at spoken word and open mic events where he performed his own poetry and music. He was a regular at the Transpoetic Playground of Carbondale, Broadway Books in Cape Girardeau, Kiki’s Coffee Shop in Anna, Howlin’ at the Moon in Cobden and other local venues. He was a member of the Illinois State Poetry Society, founder of Southpass Publications and the social media group Poet’s Post. He had published two books of short stories, a poetic journal, and, edited, or was included in over 10 poetry anthologies.
He is survived by his loving partner, Susan Steck of Cobden and her children and grandchildren; daughter, Jennifer Mitchell of Phoenix; daughters of his heart, Shawna Landstrom and Kavari Gibson of Arizona; sister, Margie (Arthur) Oldehoeft of Ames, Iowa; two nieces, Kim (Jeff Trow) Oldehoeft of Loveland, Colorado and Gretchen (Steven) Snyders and family (Isabel, Elia, Ezra and Sylvia) of Missoula, Montana and numerous cousins. He also leaves behind his lifelong friend, Clark (Janice) Newton of Jonesboro, Illinois and many other friends.
Per his request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial remembrances may be made to the donor’s choice.
