On Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, long time Superior cowboy Doug Lewis was named Cowboy of the Year for 2014. The Night of the Cowboy event was held at Los Hermanos dance hall. The event was organized by Ben Mason and the Superior Arizona Cowboy Roundup Association (SACRA). Proceeds from the event went to support the Cowboy Crisis Fund and Wounded Warriors. The event featured entertainment which included a cash bar, a steak dinner, the Cowboy of the Year award presentation, raffles, an auction, a dance and two rodeo world champions.
The entertainment featured Monty “Hawkeye” Henson playing guitar and singing country and blues. Monty is also a three time rodeo world champion saddle bronc rider. He is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Cowboy Poet Gary Kirkman of Taylor, Ariz. recited some of his poetry about his ranch life experiences. Guests danced to the music of Robert & Friends. Six time Women’s World Bull Riding Champion Tammy Kelly was in attendance. Tammy is Doug Lewis’ niece. Congratulations Doug on being named the Cowboy of the Year.
