Several of the Democratic candidates running in the upcoming election met at the Mammoth Community Center on Friday Sept. 7. The forum was sponsored by the Mammoth Senior Citizens.
The candidates that participated were incumbents Pinal County Attorney James Walsh, Pinal County School Superintendent Orlenda Roberts, Pinal County Treasurer Dolores “Dodie” Doolittle, as well as Barbara Kelly running for Pinal County Recorder and candidate for Pinal County Sheriff Kevin Taylor.
The candidates met with the people in the audience, passed out information and then were given some time to speak followed by a question and answer session.
Some of the issues brought up during the forum were Sheriff Paul Babeu posting semi-nude photos of himself on a website and his campaign teaming up with Republican candidate Lando Voyles who is running for Pinal County Attorney.
Concern was expressed that if they are both elected that Voyles would be obligated to Babeu and would be willing to overlook his indiscretions and support Babeu’s agenda much like former County Attorney Andy Thomas was beholden to Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County.
The closing of the Mammoth School was also discussed. A few Mammoth citizens expressed their displeasure with the decision. Mammoth Mayor Al Barcelo even brought up the possibility of a charter school being started up in Mammoth.
At the end of the forum there was talk about holding another forum with more Democratic candidates.
