Mountain Vista School’s wrestling team has an outstanding member (although they all are pretty great).
Gilbert Rodriguez from Mrs. Villanueva’s class is “pound for pound, all 70 of them, and so far the best wrestler in this league,” said MVS Athletic Director Greg Reiser. “His record this season is now 17 wins without a single defeat. And he is only in the sixth grade!”
Rodriguez and teammate Reno Espinozas de los Monteros are wrestling with the best of the competitors in the Central Junior High League. The wrestling coach is Gilbert Rodriguez Sr. and rounding out the staff is team mom Theresa Rodriguez. “The Rodriguezes are making Cougar Wrestling a family affair,” Reiser said.
The other winter sports programs are going strong. Girls and boys basketball are nearly at the halfway point in their respective seasons. The MVS cheer squad is performing more stunts and cheers as they lead and inspire the MVS teams and fans for the home basketball games. Coach Suzy Smith has volunteered her time to help the team learn what it takes to cheer at the next level.
