Vandals Reach Q-Finals of Padilla Tournament

The Miami baseball team reached the quarterfinals of the 35th Annual Joe S. Padilla Tournament, which started with pool play last Wednesday and concluded with championship and consolation brackets last Saturday at Florence and Combs High Schools, respectively.

The Vandals went 2 – 1 in Pool C, falling to pool-winner Apache Junction before defeating Bisbee and Round Valley to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday.

Trailing tournament host Florence 7 – 0 after three-and-a-half innings of the quarterfinal game, the Vandals scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. But the eventual tournament-champion Gophers added to two more runs in the fifth and held on for the one-run victory, 9 – 8.

Senior Trevor Horta was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Diego Garcia, a junior, had two hits and drove in two runs.

Upcoming schedule:  Mar. 14 at Round Valley (4 p.m.), Mar. 16 vs. Superior, Mar. 19 vs. Combs (1 p.m.), and Mar. 22 at Ray (4 p.m.).
