Vandals Reach Q-Finals of Padilla Tournament
The Miami baseball team reached the quarterfinals of the 35th Annual Joe S. Padilla Tournament, which started with pool play last Wednesday and concluded with championship and consolation brackets last Saturday at Florence and Combs High Schools, respectively.
The Vandals went 2 – 1 in Pool C, falling to pool-winner Apache Junction before defeating Bisbee and Round Valley to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday.
Trailing tournament host Florence 7 – 0 after three-and-a-half innings of the quarterfinal game, the Vandals scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. But the eventual tournament-champion Gophers added to two more runs in the fifth and held on for the one-run victory, 9 – 8.
Senior Trevor Horta was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Diego Garcia, a junior, had two hits and drove in two runs.
Upcoming schedule: Mar. 14 at Round Valley (4 p.m.), Mar. 16 vs. Superior, Mar. 19 vs. Combs (1 p.m.), and Mar. 22 at Ray (4 p.m.).
Pair of Globe Soccer Players Earn All-Division Recognition
Caresa Shipley and Corrinn VanBuskirk, two members of the Lady Tigers’ soccer team, were named to separate AIA All-Division teams last week.
Nearly a week after announcing its 2016 All-Section teams, the Arizona Interscholastic Association has released its 2016 All-Division teams. Local soccer players were honored once again for their performance this season, this time being recognized among the elite players around the state.
Shipley, a defender, was named to the All-Division IV Second Team. She was previously selected to the Division IV Section V First Team.
VanBuskirk, also a defender, was named All-Division IV Honorable Mention. She was previously selected to the Division IV Section V Second Team.
