San Manuel, AZ – The Comets competed at Cholla High School this past weekend against 10 southern Arizona High School teams.

AZWAY, the new folk style-wrestling league has attracted the top wrestlers in all divisions. Six Comet wrestlers came home with medals. AZWAY wrestling cards are $15 for a year’s membership. All wrestlers (K-12) with a card are insured for one year. Tournaments are $10.

The Comets will be hosted the next AZWAY tournament this Saturday at the gymnasium at San Manuel High School. There’s a Jr./Sr. High School qualifier in three weeks where if you make the finals, you qualify for the Arizona All Star Team which will travel and wrestle at the America’s Cup in California.

“This league is taking off in the right direction,” said coach Daniel Najera. “All of our wrestlers wrestled five matches. Supporting this league is beneficial to our Jr/Sr High school programs. Racking up off-season matches against quality opponents is our goal. It’s only going to make our program a stronger unit. We hope to have a good turn out next weekend.”

Results for the Cholla tourney are:

• Adrian Torres- first place

• Ruben Hernandez- first place

• Colten Smith- second place

• Joseph Lopez- second place

• Frankie Tamayo-third place

• Anthony Lopez- third place

If you have any questions and would like to the AZWAY league, please contact Daniel Najera at 520-603-9929.
