Did you know that Tuesday, Aug. 2, was declared to be National Coloring Book Day?
Now this is more than likely to be a ploy by retailers to get shoppers into their stores to purchase copious amounts of books, pencils and everything in between that might be needed to add color to pages and pages of coloring books.
Not in celebration, but certainly for the sheer fun of it, the Oracle Public Library is offering a weekly coloring session for adults and children. Adult coloring books are growing in popularity and doctors and psychologists say that coloring is a great way to relieve stress.
Barbara Haas a volunteer at the library is in charge of the program. She said she started the sessions for senior citizens. Barbara said that she has taken a class in Brain Fitness which taught that trying new things, exercise and socializing with others was good for the health of seniors. It slows down dementia, Alzheimer’s and improves memory.
Barbara moved to Oracle three years ago from San Diego. She used a lot of the services that the library offers and began volunteering with the library to give back to the community.
“Coloring is good for kids,” Barbara said. “It gets them away from their computers, tablets and cell phones. It lets them be creative.”
The coloring sessions are held at the library every Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. through the month of August. The sessions are free and Barbara provides all the coloring supplies.
