Joe Weller was named the 2012 Copper Basin Citizen of the Year. Presenting the award is the 2011 winner, Margaret Gaston.

As the new year, 2014, begins it is time to recognize and honor the 2013 Citizen of the Year. This recognition is sponsored by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce.

The following guidelines are used in the selection process and must be included in the nomination letter.

The Nominee must reside in the Copper Basin Area. Only one nominee per letter; however husband and wife teams may be nominated together, no groups. Submit a complete description of activities in which the nominee has participated, especially the most notable. Former COY’s are not eligible and may not nominate others.

All nomination letters must be signed and delivered to the chamber office in person or mail to Box 206, Kearny, AZ 85137. The deadline for submission of letters is Friday, Feb. 7. All nominees will be featured in the Copper Basin News prior to the chambers annual business meeting and Citizen of the Year (COY) recognition dinner which will be Monday, Feb. 24.

Other related chamber news is that the annual chamber membership drive and board selections are underway during January and February. Nominations for board members can be sent to the chamber office before the end of January. The Women’s Expo will be held Saturday, March 8 and is a very popular activity. The crowds get larger each year. Our local Expo is held at Hayden High School during the week of the International Women’s Expo and features local entrepreneurs who have a chance to promote their business. If you have not attended in previous years and have a business you would like to promote contact Martina Burnam at 520-705-0335.

Pioneer Days will be held March 20-24. The Queen and Junior Queen contest has begun and contestants will be having weekly meetings to prepare for the event. There are a few chairperson positions available, if interested in serving on a committee or leading an event during Pioneer Days there will be a meeting at the Pinal County Building on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m.
