The people of the Town of Mammoth celebrated Memorial Day by honoring those men and women who have given their lives so that we the people can continue to live our lives in freedom.

Local veterans made sure that all the graves of veterans at the Mammoth Valley View Cemetery were decorated with an American flag. The San Pedro Valley Lions Club served a free lunch of hamburgers with a choice of French fries or potato salad and cup cakes to all veterans and their families.

They honored Art and Juan Garcia, two brothers from Mammoth who were killed in action in Vietnam. (The scholarships given annually to graduates of San Manuel High School were established in the brothers’ honor.)

Clarification

The VFW Pedro Reynoso Post 2767 of Mammoth, in fact, placed the flags on the graves including four flags at the old Mammoth cemetery. The VFW held a ceremony at the cemetery on May 30, Memorial Day, beginning with reading the names of the fallen military out loud. The Chaplain, Lloyd Bradshaw recited In Flanders Fields. The flags were placed on the graves and then the American Flag was raised on the flagpole at the cemetery.

We thank the members of the VFW for their service both in the military and now, caring for the fallen.
