Creator and co-author of this award-winning book, along with Ernest Arroyo, Bess Taubman has put together a book that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is entertaining as well as educational. It covers Pearl Harbor from the prelude to the attack to the end of the war and the creation and establishment of the USS Arizona Memorial. The pictures of both the patriotic and propaganda posters are amazing. There are nice anecdotes and trivia throughout the book. Readers learn that Elvis Presley put on a benefit concert in Honolulu, Hawaii for the Arizona Memorial in 1961 raising $64,000. What was surprising was that one could have bought a ticket to see Elvis for as low as $3. The book even included a page at the back where one can put their own pictures of Pearl Harbor and write down their family’s memories.
Author Bess Taubman has an affinity for the men who fought and died at Pearl Harbor. She feels their story needs to be preserved and told to the younger generations so they will not forget. She travels to Pearl Harbor every Dec. 7 to attend the remembrance services at the USS Arizona Memorial at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
