Last week the San Manuel Senior Citizens learned that they had been awarded $8,000 from BHP to help with building renovations and to help increase the programs they have planned. Recently the senior center replaced the water heater and installed new faucets in both the kitchen and bathroom. They also have new tablecloths for potluck dinners.

“We are in the process of purchasing new tables and chairs, ceiling fans with lights and outdoor lighting to update our building and make it an enjoyable place to gather,” said president Dorothy Staggs. “The funds received from BHP will help make all this possible.”

Membership has increased to 50 paid members and there are many activities to choose from each week:

• You can exercise on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Elks at 8 a.m.

• A “widows” luncheon is offered on the first Monday or Tuesday of the month. The next luncheon will be on June 1 at noon at La Casita in Mammoth.

• Every Monday there is Crochet and Conversation at the San Manuel Public Library beginning at 1 p.m.

• Wednesdays are game days – 12:30 p.m. Canasta and 1 p.m. game playing every other week (come and learn some new games).

• The Senior Citizens Pot Luck night at 5 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. A fun program is usually planned.

• The Red Hats meet at the Senior Center on the second Friday of the month to plan their activity for the month.

• There is also a quilting club meeting several times a month, where they are making 100 crib size quilts for a humanitarian project.

“People 50 years and up are invited to join with us as we try to make the San Manuel Community a better place to live and enjoy our senior years,” Staggs added. “We have many more activities in the planning stage for this fall. You are welcome to come to any activity, just show up, or call for information.”

Dues are $15 a year and $1 for each activity you attend at the Senior Center to help pay for the utilities. Non-members pay $2 for each activity attended.

Please call one of the directors for more information on how to join or attend an activity.
