The Ray baseball team opened its season last week as one of five teams competing in the Tomas Pinon/Matt Huffman Memorial, a pool-play style preseason tournament hosted by Casa Grande and Maricopa high schools.
The Cats went 1 – 3 in the four-day tournament, which began with a 7 – 5 loss to Marana on Feb. 25.
Ray’s lone win in the tourney came against Maricopa, an 11 – 1 run-rule victory on Feb. 27. The Cats scored in each of the game’s five innings, which included scoring three runs each in the second, fourth, and fifth frames.
The Bearcats, the only Division IV team in the tournament, played against four Division II programs – Marana, Casa Grande, Maricopa, and Higley.
Upcoming schedule: Mar. 4 at Combs (3:15 p.m.), Mar. 6 at Combs vs. Estrella Foothills (3:15 p.m.). Both games are part of the Joe S. Padilla Tournament, which may continue through this weekend. Next week, the Cats will play their home opener on Mar. 10 vs. Show Low. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
