Freshman Marcos Bueno and senior Ricky Longoria combined for 39 points to lead Superior to a 60 – 56 victory versus Ray last Wednesday. Bueno scored a game-high 22 points while Longoria added 17 points.
Last Wednesday’s win was the Panthers first against the Bearcats since 2009 and broke an eight-game losing streak versus their rival.
Superior sophomore Edgar Pacheco’s field goal to end the first quarter tied the game at 14 and the Panthers never looked back from there. They scored the first four points of the second quarter to grab a lead they would not relinquish.
Already leading 28 – 27 to start the third quarter, Superior outscored the ‘Cats 9 – 3 to extend its lead to seven, 37 – 30.
Longoria scored 8 of his 17 points in the final quarter, helping the Panthers increase their lead to eight points, their largest of the night.
The Bearcats’ used their own 7 – 2 run during the final three minutes of the final quarter to pull within three, but couldn’t get any closer. Longoria hit 1 of 2 free throws to seal Panthers first win in five years versus the ‘Cats.
The ‘Cats played Cibecue on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Game results were unavailable at press time.
Bearcats’ upcoming schedule:Jan. 8 vs. Hayden, and Jan. 9 vs. San Carlos. All games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
