The Ray baseball team has won its last two games versus sectional opponents who were ahead of it in the standings. The most recent was a 15 – 0 lopsided victory against then second-ranked Superior last Tuesday. The Cats also defeated San Manuel on April 3, 5 – 2.

Senior Robbin Newman led the sixth-ranked Cats in the win against the Panthers, going 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Derek Pacheco and Destry Yocum each had three RBI in the game, while Douglas McPeak and Cole Yocum each drove in two runs in the game. Seth Harmon was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Destry Yocum and McPeak combined to pitch four shutout innings, allowing only one hit and three walks. The duo struck out nine Panthers’ hitters.

The win moves the Cats into a three-way, first-place tie with Superior and San Manuel in the Section VI standings. Ray holds the tiebreaker advantage against both teams thanks to their recent head-to-head victories.

After a game at top-ranked Desert Christian on April 14, the Cats will have an eight-day break before returning to action on April 22 vs. Gilbert Classical Academy. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
