The sixth-ranked Ray baseball team maintained its hold on first place in the Section VI standings after lopsided wins against Gilbert Classical Academy and Hayden last week.
Now 9 – 1 in sectional play, the Cats can clinch the sectional championship and an automatic berth in the state tournament with a win at home on Apr. 28 against seventh-ranked San Manuel. A loss to the Miners would not prevent the Cats from winning the sectional title, depending on the results of other games that could impact the standings.
In last Wednesday’s 10 – 0 win against Gilbert Classical Academy, Destry Yocum went 2-for-3, including a triple, and drove in three runs. Sophomore Jordan Pace hit his first homerun of the season and had two RBI. Derek Pacheco also had two RBI in the Cats’ win.
Senior Robbin Newman, making his first start of the year, pitched a complete-game shutout, limiting the Spartans to only five hits. He struck out four in what was his first win of the season.
The Cats will play their final regular season game at home on Apr. 29 before the state playoffs this weekend. Check the AIA website (www.azpreps365.com) for playoff matchups, times, and locations, which will be released later this week.
