The eleventh annual Dia de Colores art festival this weekend celebrated many types of art forms including sculptures, jewelry making, food preparations, painting and photography.

The day started with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Superior Little League and Superior Optimist Club. Their breakfast nourished the visitors and local residents with pancakes, eggs, and bacon.

The two groups are responsible for providing activities for the youth and families of Superior including the annual Little League season.

Twenty-three classic cars lined Main St. giving everyone a chance to see and touch these pieces of work on wheels.

From bright yellow Chevys and a bright orange Mustang powered by NOS there were many types of cars and motorcycles to visit.

The winners of the car show were Pete Acosta with a 1932 three window coup. Second place was Sundt Electric with a 1970 El Camino and third place went to Ted Diestler with a 1930 Ford Pickup.

The Superior Senior Center was filled with vendors selling their wares. There were many great things to purchase at the vendor fair from handmade scarves by Nancy Vogler, ceramic pots and horses by Kerri Richards and Tina Gutierre.

Susie Ketron had a booth filled with homemade jellies, purses, and other metal works. Lou Oates one of the many photographers who uses Superior as his canvas was on hand selling prints of his photos and photo collages.

While many visited these free events during the festival for a small fee of $10 visitors could purchase a ticket that would allow them access to the normally private home studios of some of Superior’s resident artists.

On this tour, visitors could purchase art directly from the artist, visit with the artist and learn more about their art techniques. It is on the this tour that one would discover the many and varied talents of Tommy Macias, Terry Stone, Marilee Lasch, Chuck Davidson, Bernie Neinaber, and John Moreno.

Each studio offered a different type of art clay bells and pots, hand made guitars and wood carvings to jewelry, painting and other mixed art forms. It is without a doubt that Superior is home to many talented artists and crafters and this festival has been a great way to celebrate their contributions to the community.

An art festival would not be complete without the art of music. Throughout the day there were live bands playing at Porters Cafe and individual musicians playing in the Senior Center.

The annual festival was sponsored by the Superior Chamber of Commerce. The committee organizing this event was Lynn Heglie, he was assisted by Karen Barker and Paul Wolterbeck.

The next upcoming event for the Superior Chamber of Commerce is the fifth annual Home and Building tour it is scheduled for Jan. 26 and 27 2013.
